Slow Train: Sad Heart

Kenneth H Ashley

The train goes sliding, sliding and sliding,
By factory, farm, and truck-packed siding,
To one jog-trot refrain.
Pictures are flowing, merging and going,
In one unbroken chain:
Urban, suburban; urban, suburban;
Urban, suburban; the fields again.
Only the present, always the present,
The dreary present, caught by the pane -

Caught by the pane, where a mind's forsaking
The fleeting pictures the eyes are taking,
To view the past again -
Pictures are flowing, merging and going,
Wearily through a brain:
Chiding, deriding; chiding, deriding;
To a sad heart's refrain;
Ever, forever; ever, forever;
Never, for ever; never again.
